Back Up Sump Pump May 2, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is an interesting product. It is ideal for those who may live where basements are common and there is a danger of basement flooding or water damage. Most such basements have a sump (pit) of some sort with an electric pump. The sump collects any water that may seep down around the basement walls or come from ground water under the basement floor. The electric pump is controlled by a float switch and pumps out any water that may collect. The problem comes if the pump or its electric supply fail for any reason. Then (and only then) would this back up, city water powered pump kick in. Relatively easy to install if you are handy with home plumbing. Has to hook to city water (cold water pipe) source, and is cut into the sump pump drain pipe (usually 1.5" PVC). Has its own float that installs in the sump pit. If the water rises too much (if the electric sump pump fails for any reason) this pump then operates and is entirely powered by city water flowing through it. Uses about 1 gal of city water for each 2 gal of sump water it pumps. Therefore not intended as a primary sump pump - only a backup. Very effective, very elegant solution to a specific problem. A bit pricy for the amount of material that comes in the kit but well worth the price to solve the problem. I did a lot of research before buying this model of water powered backup pump. I still believe it is the best available.
