Battery Backup Sump Pump

Battery Backup Sump Pump Operation

A battery backup sump pump is powered by a 12-volt marine style battery. It starts operation automatically when the primary pump fails. It uses its own float, which starts the pump when water level in the sump pit rises too high - above the level normally allowed by the primary pump. Once it empties the pit and drain tiles, it automatically shuts off. Depending on the charge of the battery, the battery backup sump pump can run continuously for five to seven hours.

Typically battery backup pumps also contain alarms to alert you that the primary pump has failed, so that it can be fixed or replaced. This alarm is run off the battery so it will operate even in a power outage.

Battery Backup Sump Pump Maintenance

Since a battery backup pump is powered by a battery, the battery charge should be check regularly (every couple of months or more during heavy operation.) Some models come with a battery charge indicator on the pump itself to let you know how the battery is doing.

Also the actual pump should be tested once or twice a year by turning off the primary pump and filling the basin until the backup pump kicks on.
