Backup Sump Pump

Even the best pump won't work when the power goes out, typically during a major storm, which is when it is needed the most. So what can you do to protect against this situation?

Install a backup sump pump system. Backup sump pumps are auxilary pumps that are used in tandem with the primary pump. They kick when the main pump fails, saving your basement from flooding. Typically, they are slower than standard pumps, but it will still discharge the water from the pit.

There are two main types: One type, battery backup sump pump, runs an a rechargeable 12-volt battery. The battery is charged when the power is on, so that it will have enough power to run the backup pump. Another, a water powered backup sump, is hooked to the home's potable water system and operates by water pressure. This type doesn't require a power source and is very maintanence free.

You will have to decide whether or not you need backup sump pump protection, based on the likelihood of a power or pump failure. If you have an unfinished basement then a high-water alarm might suffice. On the other hand, if you have a finished basement with carpeting and furnishings, a backup pump will give you the flood protection you need and peace of mind that your belongings are protected.
